Transport

Everybody in the Netherlands owns a bike, irrespective of their income or social status. The government even has a minister who is renowned for the fact that he goes to work by bike. Often it's the best way to get somewhere on time, in particular in a city. Because Holland is densely populated, the roads are often congested and in the cities it's hard to get through traffic or to find a parking space. It is also considered a healthy activity, and in their spare time the Dutch like to go for a bike ride. The number of bike thefts, however, is very high. It's no unnecessary luxury to buy a decent padlock.

You can get almost anywhere by public transport. The Netherlands has an extensive railway network and if there isn't a train headed towards your destination, you can always take a bus.
